gelatine
Hi all! I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I want to know if there is a vegan/vegetarian version of gelatine or another ingredient that can substitute it. Thanks :)

Re: gelatine
Hi Sarah!
It depends on what you want to do with gelatine... There are other thickening agents, of course, but gelatine is not normally used in home cooking anyway. Much confectionery contains gelatine but there are vegan confectionery products available. Can you say a little more about what you mean by your question? Domenic

Re: gelatine
We needed to make some cakes and gelatine was needed in some of the recipes. I’m trying to avoid using gelatine, so I wanted to know if there was another ingredient that will help the mixture to set. I hope that helps :)

Re: gelatine
One that you could try is agar flakes - it is an extract from seaweed. It is a setting and thickeningagent, it's rich in iron and other minerals and has no taste, so it doesn't change the taste of what you're cooking.
The other alternative is to look for vegan cake recipes rather than trying to adapt the ones you've got - there are variety of books on vegan baking around - there's one mentioned in the upcoming edition of Generation V. You can sometimes find vegan recipes on the net too. Or if you have any great vegan cake recipes, everyone, feel free to post them here on the forum!
Let us know how you go, Sarah.
